How to Water Your Garden

To have a beautiful garden, you have to know how much moisture your particular garden will need to properly nourish your flowers and vegetables. Too much water can be bad and too little will also affect the blooms and vegetation. There are many variables to your garden. So much depends on the kind of soil you have. The soils with clay in it brings its own kind of challenge.

Clay soil is difficult to deal with. It does not give the plants and their roots much room to grow as it is so compacted. Try to water in the early morning or in the evening when temperatures are lower and the evaporation factor will not be present. If you put too much water on a plant that is susceptible to disease, then you might invite a fungus that would attack the leaves and flowers.

If you water early in the morning for those plants, then the warmth of the sun coming up will quickly dry the leaves and discourage any fungus from growing. Also, watering about an inch of water per week is a good yardstick. This is just enough water so the lawn is not completely dried out yet. However, consider the soil and its composition. Young plants or grass seedlings need a little more water for their roots to grab hold of the soil. Mature plants and shrubs can be watered much more, but less often. Watering your garden is like having a balanced meal. Provide just enough for their good health.
