Assuming building your garden means planning it, you will need a thorough plan. Now if you have a woodland garden, you may just want to plant native grasses, and there are many beautiful ones.
If you are going to plant a vegetable garden you will still need a great plan. Measure your garden plot and decide what you are going to plant. If you are planting corn, you will need space for at least four rows for good pollination, and your garden should run east to west, so it gets good sun and the corn won't shade the lower growing plants. If you are growing cucumbers, they should be on a fence of sorts and placed so they also don't shade other plants. Make sure your rows run east to west so they get sun all day. The rest is simple, if you have done your homework. If you have a very large garden, you may not have to cage tomatoes. You will need some support for the peas and pole beans.
If you are building a raised bed garden, you may want to get the book "Square Foot Gardening" for help. It has all the information you will need to build that garden. If you have a small place for a garden, raised beds are great. It's not like having an acre for garden, but less work and a lot of planting is needed if you plan and build it right.
