Watering Your Garden

For plants to survive they must have water. This is essential along with sunlight and good soil. The trick in watering plants is that one must make sure they get enough water but one should not over water and flood the soil. Along with that, it is complicated in that different plants, different climates, and different weather require different amounts and times of watering. If there is not enough rain then the watering must begin.

If there isn't enough rain then one should give the plant bed a deep soak once a week so that the plants will root deeply. It is better to water thoroughly once a week then to do shallow watering every day or two. Watering is especially essential if the plants are growing in the shade under trees. Trees take out moisture and leave very little moisture for the plants growing under them. It is helpful to mulch the bed. The mulch helps keep the soil moist and the plants will need less watering.

It is best to water at night as this makes the fungal disease less apt to appear, although there is some thought to water early in the morning. New plants are especially in need of regular watering for they are growing their root system. Too much water is almost as bad as too little water. If one can use one inch of watering once a week one can consider that a sufficient amount unless the days are all very hot and windy. Then a more frequent watering may be necessary.
