More and more people today are growing their own gardens because it is a relaxing and rewarding past time.
When you decide to start a garden, just where do you begin? Sit down with a pencil and some paper and choose the plants you want to grow. Your next step is to select a location and this is where it can get tricky. Big yards offer a lot of options, but even small yards and apartments can be creative places. Container gardens are perfect for apartments, they are portable so you can bring them inside if it gets cold.
Once you have picked a spot it is time to check the soil, you need good drainage for a garden to do well. Dig a hole about a foot wide and 2 feet deep, fill it with water and see how long it takes to empty. Sand or clay can be a challenge, but raised beds can take care of drainage issues.
Make sure you group plants together according to water and sun requirements. You can use soaker hoses for watering many kinds of plants, but not all of them will benefit from this option. Some kinds of plants also need to be staked such as tomatoes, peas, and other vine type plants.
You also need to know what the seasonal schedule is for your plants, not all of them go in the ground at the same time. You also need to decide how to handle pests when they move into your new garden. You can spray for them or use ladybugs and praying mantis eggs to encourage these predators to help you naturally.
Now that everything is in the ground, start your watering regimen and watch as your garden springs to life.
