Designing your own garden can be a very rewarding experience. If you love gardening, and most people do, creating a special place outside your house is a challenging and fun project.
The first thing you should do is stand back and picture the outline of what you want to create. Keep in mind the amount of sun the area gets as well as the amount of shade. This is critical in picking out plants that will thrive in the right setting. No design will ever be done, as your garden will continue to change shape and form as the plants grow. Plants should be the bulk of your garden.
Flowering plants will really give your design some beautiful color and texture. They are low maintenance, which is a great advantage. There is little to be pruned and plucked in bushes and shrubs, and if you alternate the blooming seasons, you will always have color in your garden. You should always be aware of the height of your bushes because you want the lower growing shrubs in the front and the higher ones in the back. You can create focal points with annuals and brilliant colors every year. They are eye catching and beautiful to look at. Make sure to mulch early and be generous with your fertilizer. There are so many gorgeous containers now for flowers. That can be another one of your focal points. Also, do not forget spring and fall. You can purchase so many plants and shrubs that will give your garden color all year around.
