Garden Watering Tips

When plants start to look droopy, it’s time to water them. It is OK to allow the soil to partially dry between watering. Tough plants that live for several years should be watered even if they stay droopy after it cools off in the evening. When you water a plant deeply, you should make sure you moisten the whole root zone as this builds healthier root systems.

Watering during the cool of the morning or in the evening when the sun is less hot and water loss through evaporation is less minimal is a good idea to keep in mind. You should water your lawn separately from your plants. Some people build their soil with mulch and compost to hold water and prevent evaporation.

Avoid watering plants that are disease susceptible at night as you don’t want to have water sitting on plant foliage for hours since it can cause fungal disease for plant leaves. Set a rain gauge out in the garden to find out how much rainfall it gets each week. Rain gauges are helpful in determining when you have watered enough with overhead sprinklers. When using sprinklers, always make sure they aren’t watering the pavement.

To reiterate some important tips on watering your garden, water less often as it can save you time and water. To give plants more time to absorb water before the midday sun dries the soil, it is best to water them early in the day. Mulch helps conserve water and is a lifesaver for plants. You can also save water by using a simple drip irrigation system, which is a hose with tiny pinholes that deliver moisture to plants at a slow and steady pace. If you want your garden to look fresh in the summer, give it regular watering. However, this is a costly and lengthy task.
