Common Gardening Problems

The first problem most gardeners face, is where to put the garden. Most vegetables require full sun, for at least six hours per day. So use caution when placing near large trees, or buildings that may block the sun. Find a convenient spot that is easy to get to, with good soil and drainage. Another problem is, not everyone has good soil. The soil might be rocky or hard clay. This is the time to condition the soil, before planting. Invest in a good tiller to loosen up the soil. It can also be done by hand, with a good spade. Make sure to have good compost, or better yet several different types of compost. Till the compost into the ground. This will give you a good start, which you can add to each year. A good grade of rotted manure, will also be a plus to the garden plants.

Weeds are a constant problem to the home gardener. An effective method to deal with them, is to put down weed blocker cloth before you plant. Getting water to the plants, is also a necessity. The most effective method, is to put in a drip system. This will water the plants slowly and deeply. When the plants have developed good foliage, using a spray type watering system can damage the crop.

Another major problem is pest control. Your garden can be attacked by everything, from grasshoppers, to snails and slugs. Many experienced gardeners, plant marigolds around the outer edge. For snails and slugs, ground up eggshells, placed around the plants has been used successfully.
