When it comes to gardening, probably the most important aspect of getting your garden to grow to its fullest potential is by how you fertilize it. Of course, watering your plants is important too, but making sure that your plants get the right nutrients to feed off of will allow you to get the results you are hoping for. If you are new to gardening and you want to begin right away, that’s great. For future reference, the fall is the best time to start fertilizing your garden. To yield the best results, you want to start preparing the ground to receive your plants.
Before you fertilize your garden, you want to make sure that the soil is the correct pH. This is easy to test. Just buy a pH testing kit at any hardware store. You want to make sure that if your garden is acidic, if it has a pH of 5.8 or lower, then you need to add some lime to it. If your garden is alkaline, meaning its pH is 7.2 or greater you want to add iron sulfate, powdered sulfur or aluminum sulfate to the soil. You want to add whichever additive is necessary in the fall and allow it to sit in the soil and soak in throughout the winter months. You’ll also want to add some manure to fertilize your soil.
After the winter months, when you are ready to plant your seeds, you want to make sure that your seeds are grouped together in a way that allows your product to get the proper amount of nutrients. If you are planting vegetables, some vegetables need more fertilizer than others. Also, pay attention to how much sun is directly hitting your garden. This can determine which plants you grow in that particular area.
