Geraniums are great flowers to grow whether it is along with other annuals or by themselves. They will also look good being the edge line in a flower garden. Geraniums are great for adding a lot of color to your garden. When planting geraniums make sure they have a lot of light. Most types of geraniums need about 6 hours of direct sunlight. If you live in an area where the temperature is over 90, you may need to plant them in a partially shaded spot. Many do well in the shade but may not bloom as well.
When you water your geraniums make sure they are watered well and very regularly when there is not enough rain. Checking the soil is key to making sure they are getting enough water, but, they also need to dry out a little between watering. Poking your finger into the soil is a good way to check the water saturation of the soil. If the soil is dry two inches down you may need to water the plants. Along with watering you need to make sure the soil is sufficient in aiding in the growth of your plants along with being able to drain well. The soil needs to be rich, adding a little compost can help with that. A very small amount of sand can mix with the soil and compost and help with the drainage. Do not add too much. Do not plant geraniums too deeply. If you do you could cause them to get stem-rot then they will die out.
Keeping your geraniums pretty is fairly easy to do. Having dry, dead leaves are a common happening in geraniums. Yellow leaves are usually caused by too much or not enough water. All you have to do is remove the dry leaves, even the ones that are discolored looking. Your plant will look healthier longer if you do. Red looking leaves means your plant might have had too much cold. If you want you can plant the flowers inside during winter. That way you can enjoy geraniums year round.
