How to Build a Water Garden

A water garden is a manmade garden implementing the use of ponds, aquatic plants and fish. This kind of garden first got its fame in the Chinese and Japanese culture, centuries ago. For a water garden, you can use already existing water sources such as a pond, small stream or small lake. If you do not happen to have one of these in your backyard, then you have start from scratch.

First you will need to know where in your yard you can dig without destroying or damaging water, sewer, electrical, gas, or cable lines. Then you will have to determine how big you want your pond to be. Next you need to decide how deep it is going to be. Remember that the aquatic plants and fish do best in more shallow water.

You can also establish a water garden above ground if you cannot dig in your yard. You can use barrels, small plastic pools or other waterproof containers. You will want to pick plants and rocks for the border of your water garden. Then you look into what you need to do to the water to make it adaptable to your fish and water plants.

You can make multilayered water gardens by putting in different levels of containers, or building a pound in a small hill with a small river or a waterway sloping down to another pond. Remember that water attracts other animals as well. Your water garden will be a serene and peaceful place that is much more in tune with nature than just a regular flower bed.
