Plans play a role in daily life. What to eat, what to wear, where to go, and most everything else are all planned. A garden needs a plan as well. Spring is just around the corner, and before you know it, the time will have arrived to implement your plan. Designing a garden is similar to interior decorating. Think about the kind of gardener you will be – full time, part time, or weekend. Pick a theme and give some thought to the colors of flowers that you want. You will want varieties of flowers and colors that compliment each other and that are also complimentary to your home and yard.
Houses are built on solid foundations. Gardens, too, should start with a good foundation. Figure out the optimum location for the garden. Consider sun and shade factors and water requirements. Check the area for good drainage. Poor quality soil will need to be amended, and garden centers sell test kits to help you do so. For a small fee, the local cooperative extension will test the soil for you.
Make sure to include a good mix of annuals and perennials in your flower garden. Determine what kind of garden you want. You can have a container garden on the patio, in the ground, in a raised bed, in hanging baskets on the front porch, or a combination of all these. Build the garden over time for the best results. It can be overwhelming to try to introduce too many plants into your design in just one season, so you will need to allow for trial and error. Incorporate some whimsy into your garden to give it a personal flair. An old rubber boot, wheelbarrow, fountain, birdbath, garden statues, or wind chimes will certainly bring a smile and add that special touch.
