How to Grow Your Own Tomatoes

Growing your own tomatoes can be a very fun and fulfilling project. In the end, you will reap the rewards of enjoying juicy homegrown tomatoes! You can grow tomatoes inside or outside. Growing your own tomatoes only involves a few simple steps.

The first step is to pick either a container or a spot in the yard to plant them in. Make sure your tomatoes will have at least six hours of sunlight each day. If you choose to use a container, make sure the container has drainage holes, and is at least six inches in diameter. If you are planting them outdoors, prepare the soil with fertilizer and mix it evenly. A good potting soil will work fine for your indoor container.

Next, you will purchase tomato seeds, or buy seedlings already started at your local nursery. You will want to plant the seeds about a 1/4 inch deep. Then cover them with soil and water thoroughly. You will need to fertilize your tomatoes about every 2 weeks, and keep the soil moist until you see sprouts. After they have sprouted, you will water your tomato plants to keep the soil moist, but not soggy. As your tomato plant grows, you will need to stake the stem. Wooden dowels work great for this, and the stakes will allow your tomatoes to hang from the vine, without bending to the ground.

Growing your own tomatoes will certainly bring a smile to your face. Tasting a tomato you've grown yourself will make you want to grow even more. There are dozens of different varieties of tomatoes out there, so pick a few to grow, and enjoy!
